Heavy, non-stop rain in North Bengal has caused widespread disaster, leading to at least 28 deaths. The region experienced severe landslides, especially in Mirik where 14 people lost their lives as their homes were buried, and flash floods. A major historical structure, the Dudhia iron bridge over the Balason River, also collapsed. These events have caused major travel disruptions, blocking important roads like NH10, and have left thousands of people, including over 1,000 tourists, stuck in the Darjeeling hills.

Rescue teams, including the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), are working hard to save people, and airlifts are being used to help those stranded. Authorities have been evacuating people from dangerous areas like Kalimpong, Kurseong, and the Dooars plains. Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have offered their sympathies and announced financial help for the victims’ families, with ₹5 lakh for those who died and ₹3 lakh for the injured. Chief Minister Banerjee has also gone to the region to personally supervise the relief efforts.
