We have arrested Sandipan Garg. Now, we are doing the necessary legal formalities, says CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta

The ongoing investigation into the mysterious death of popular singer Zubeen Garg, known for hits like ‘Ya Ali,’ took a significant turn with the arrest of his cousin, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandipan Garg. The APS officer was present with the 52-year-old singer on the yacht in Singapore where Zubeen Garg tragically died on September 19 while swimming near an island. The singer was in Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival. Following intense interrogation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), DSP Sandipan Garg was taken into custody. He was subsequently presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court, which granted the police a seven-day remand, despite the Special Investigation Team (SIT) requesting a 14-day period.

This recent arrest follows the earlier detention of four others connected to the singer: his bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, manager Siddharth Sharma, and event organizers Shyamkanu Mahanta and Amritprava Mahanta. The investigation was fueled by serious allegations, notably from bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, who claimed that Zubeen Garg was poisoned by his manager and the event organizer. Goswami further alleged that a foreign location was deliberately chosen to conceal the crime.

Adding to the complexities of the case, Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, has publicly voiced her suspicions regarding his death. She has challenged the official autopsy report from the Singapore police, which initially concluded that there was no foul play involved. Her concerns about “serious lapses” in the investigation further indicate that the circumstances surrounding the death of the renowned Bollywood and Assamese music artist remain highly questionable and subject to ongoing scrutiny. The arrests and continued questioning of those close to Zubeen Garg underscore the seriousness of the investigation into the unexpected loss of the singer.
