The transparent and efficient electoral system of India is drawing significant international attention, with South African Parliamentarians expressing a keen interest in learning from it. This shows the global recognition of India’s democratic process, especially its ability to handle elections on a massive scale.

Surprise Call and Best Wishes

The international interest was highlighted by a surprise phone call to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar from the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of South Africa, Mosotho Moepya. The South African head extended his best wishes for the ongoing Bihar Assembly polls, which is a huge exercise involving nearly 7.5 crore voters.

Planned Visit to Learn from the World’s Largest Democracy

According to an Election Commission (EC) spokesperson, the Parliamentarians from South Africa plan to visit India soon. Their main objective is to gain an understanding of one of the world’s most transparent and efficient electoral systems. Given that South Africa has a bicameral parliamentary system (the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces), learning from India’s experience in managing large-scale, complex elections would be highly valuable for their own democratic processes.
