Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney openly praised US President Donald Trump during their meeting at the White House, calling him a “transformative president.” Carney specifically gave credit to Trump for bringing “peace” between India and Pakistan, along with other global achievements like the economic transformation and increased defense spending by NATO partners. These comments marked a change in tone from Canada, following months of strained relations due to Trump’s tariff threats and his controversial suggestion that Canada should be “annexed” by the US.

President Trump also took credit for the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. In a separate address, he claimed that the US’s trade leverage and his use of tariffs had positioned the country as a “peacekeeping” nation, stopping what would have been a major conflict. Trump stated that India and Pakistan “were ready to go at it” and mentioned that “Seven planes were shot down,” before his undisclosed, but “very effective,” diplomatic intervention.

Trump has repeatedly claimed since May 10 that he successfully mediated a “full and immediate” ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed nations, asserting this nearly 50 times. The ceasefire followed four days of intense cross-border fighting, which included drone and missile strikes. India had launched “Operation Sindoor” on May 7 in retaliation for a terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that killed 26 civilians.

Despite Trump’s continuous claims to have prevented a major war, India has strongly and repeatedly denied that any third party, including the US, played a mediation role. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has insisted that the ceasefire understanding was reached directly and solely through established military communication channels between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan.
