Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has announced a landmark investment of $15 billion over the next five years to build a massive Artificial Intelligence (AI) data center campus in the port city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian stated that this facility will be the company’s largest AI hub globally outside of the United States, cementing India’s role in the future of artificial intelligence.

A Cornerstone for India’s Digital Future

The project is more than just a data center; it’s a multi-faceted AI hub that will combine gigawatt-scale computing power, an expanded fiber-optic network, and large-scale renewable energy systems. The goal is to provide world-class, low-latency AI infrastructure to Indian enterprises and users. Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated the hub will “accelerate AI innovation and drive growth across the country.” The Andhra Pradesh government, which has been offering subsidized land and power to attract global investors, hailed the project as a “massive leap” for the state’s digital future.

Empowering ‘AI for All’ and Domestic Industry

The data hub is part of a larger plan to strengthen India’s position as a global technology leader. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the investment, saying it aligns with the vision to build a developed India and will be a powerful force in democratizing technology, ensuring “AI for All.” Furthermore, the initiative is expected to support the government’s goal of developing 6GW of data center capacity by 2029 and will create significant job opportunities in the region.

Partnership with Indian Giants

To bring this massive infrastructure project to life, Google has partnered with Indian conglomerates Adani Group and Bharti Airtel. The Adani Group’s joint venture, AdaniConneX, will focus on building the core infrastructure and powering the hub with clean energy. Separately, Airtel will assist with establishing a crucial international subsea gateway in Visakhapatnam, which will greatly boost India’s global digital connectivity and provide route diversity to complement existing cable landings on the west and south coasts.
