Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a ₹100 silver coin and postage stamp on October 1 to honor the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s centenary, featuring Bharat Mata and RSS volunteers to recognize the organization’s contributions to nation-building and disaster relief. The items, produced by the Kolkata Mint and India Post, saw rapid online sell-outs and website crashes due to high demand. A viral social media claim of a Dutch commemorative stamp was debunked as a user-generated design, not an official release.

The Government of India has released special commemorative coins and stamps to mark the 100th anniversary (centenary) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This announcement was recently made by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who stated that the commemoratives honor a century of the organization’s “service, unity, and dedication.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the one who released the specially designed commemorative postage stamp and coin on October 1st, during the centenary celebrations. He used the occasion to commend the RSS for its long-standing commitment to nation-building, stating that it has helped strengthen countless lives over the years. The Prime Minister drew a parallel, saying that just as civilizations flourish by mighty rivers, “hundreds of lives have blossomed and thrived along the banks and in the flow of the RSS.”

The Prime Minister also highlighted the significance of the RSS being founded exactly 100 years ago on the day of Vijayadashami, or Dussehra. He emphasized that this was no coincidence, as the festival itself symbolizes the victory of good over evil, truth over falsehood, and light over darkness, suggesting the RSS’s founding was a revival of an ancient, grand objective focused on the nation.

The RSS, a volunteer-based organization, was founded in 1925 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. Its original goal was to instill cultural awareness, discipline, service, and social responsibility among citizens. The newly released commemorative items, which include special coins available for online order and stamps available at Philately Bureaus, serve as an official government recognition of the organization’s century-long journey and its contributions to the country’s socio-cultural landscape.
