The film Kantara Chapter 1, directed by Rishab Shetty, has made a huge splash at the box office since its release on October 2. In just the first three days, the movie earned more than ₹235 crore (2350 million) worldwide. This massive success means it has the second-biggest opening of 2025, right after the movie Coolie. The film’s strong start has resulted in sold-out shows all across India, and it is also performing very well in international markets.
Kantara Chapter 1 is actually a prequel, meaning it tells the story that happened before the original film. It is set a long time ago in a 9th-century kingdom and focuses on tribal kings and divine elements. A central part of the story is the traditional Bhuta Kola rituals connected to a local deity named Panjurli. The movie has received high praise from many famous celebrities for its excellent depiction of ancient Indian traditions.
