India strongly criticized Pakistan at the United Nations after Pakistan tried to bring up the issue of women in Kashmir. India’s representative, Parvathaneni Harish, firmly rejected Pakistan’s claims about Kashmir, calling them “delusional.” He then focused on Pakistan’s own terrible history regarding women’s rights, specifically bringing up the brutal ‘Operation Searchlight’ from 1971. Harish accused Pakistan’s army of carrying out a systematic campaign of genocidal mass rape against 400,000 women in what was then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). He argued that a country known for such mass atrocities and for “bombing its own people” (referring to a recent air strike in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) is simply trying to mislead the world with false claims.

India’s representative stated that the world can clearly see through Pakistan’s propaganda, especially since the claims made by Pakistan’s representative about women in Kashmir were, as usual, not supported by any evidence. In essence, India shifted the focus from Pakistan’s unproven allegations about Kashmir back onto Pakistan’s own dark and widely documented history of human rights abuses and systematic violence against women during the 1971 conflict, effectively attacking Pakistan’s credibility at the UN forum.
