Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya arrived in New Delhi on Thursday for her first official visit to India since taking office. This three-day trip is intended to continue the tradition of close and regular engagement between the two nations and strengthen their long-standing friendship.

A Packed Schedule Focused on Bilateral Ties

During her visit, PM Amarasuriya will engage in high-level discussions with Indian political leaders to address shared interests and bilateral issues. The goal of these meetings is to advance the deep and diverse relationship between India and Sri Lanka, a relationship that is guided by India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and its maritime strategy, known as the ‘MAHASAGAR Vision’.

Focus on Education, Technology, and Business

A significant part of the Prime Minister’s itinerary focuses on strengthening ties in education and commerce. As Sri Lanka’s Education Minister, she is scheduled to visit the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and NITI Aayog to explore new possibilities for collaboration in technology and the education sector. She will also participate in a dedicated business event designed to boost trade and commercial links between the two countries.

Homecoming to Her Alma Mater

Adding a personal touch to her official visit, PM Amarasuriya will also visit her alma mater, Hindu College at Delhi University, where she was a distinguished alumna. This visit highlights the deep cultural and educational connections shared between India and Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the Prime Minister will deliver the keynote address at the NDTV World Summit, an event co-organized in Delhi.

Honoring Mahatma Gandhi

Before her departure for India, PM Amarasuriya, along with the Indian High Commissioner, paid floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Prime Minister’s Office in Colombo on October 2nd. This act of homage was a tribute to the Father of the Nation on his 156th birth anniversary, recognizing his enduring legacy of non-violent resistance and his pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle.
