Recent Violence in Cuttack

The city of Cuttack, Odisha, is currently under a curfew and an internet shutdown following a series of group clashes that started during a Durga idol immersion procession. The initial violence broke out late Friday night in the Dargha Bazaar area when one group objected to the loud music played by a procession group. This led to an escalation where stones and glass bottles were thrown, injuring about six people, including the Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and disrupting another procession. Local residents then staged a protest, blaming the administration for failing to prevent the clash, despite a heavy police presence at the time.

Government Action and Curfew Details

The situation worsened with fresh violence on Sunday, where protesters clashed with the police, resulting in at least 25 more injuries. In response to the escalating tension, the Odisha government imposed prohibitory orders (curfew) across 13 police station areas of Cuttack. These orders became effective for 36 hours starting from 10 pm on Sunday. Additionally, all internet services (mobile, broadband, and messaging apps) were suspended for 24 hours to prevent the spread of “provocative and inflammatory messages” that could further disrupt public order. Police have arrested six people and are using technology to identify other individuals involved in the violence.
